McCarthy were formed in 1985 by Malcolm Eden, Tim Gane, John Williamson and Gary Baker.
They mixed a melodic style, dominated by Gane’s 12-string guitar playing, with Eden’s
overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band’s far left
leanings.

Medium Medium’s debut album, The Glitterhouse, was originally released on Cherry Red
in October 1981. This reissue also features the “Hungry, So Angry,” single version
which was produced by Adrian Sherwood at Berry Street Studio in London. In Sound
International magazine Dave Henderson wrote prophetically, “It could be one of the
most important records of the type to emerge this year and will doubtlessly be revered
as a classic after the group have long since departed.” Also included is a selection
of tracks from Cherry Red’s 2001 Hungry, So Angry retrospective compilation album,
the B-side of the band’s debut single on Apt and a previously unreleased demo version
of a song from the 1982 Sound-Products EP. It includes a bonus EP featuring previously
unreleased tracks from the 2008 Village recording session. All of the various lineups
of Medium Medium are represented.
Formed at the end of 1978 Medium Medium’s self-described “extreme dance music” had
reviewers scrambling to draw comparisons with the band’s contemporaries and find a
label for its post punk sound.

Named after Stanley Cohen’s book on youth subcultures “Folk Devils and Moral Panics”,
this highly underrated British band was as far as one could get from ‘folk music’ at
the time. They were formed by Co. Durham native Ian Lowery (formerly of The Wall and
Ski Patrol) in late 1983 with a line up that consisted of Whiteley (Bass), Kris
Jozajtis (Guitar) and Alan Cole (Drums). Throughout their short lifespan, the band
released several acclaimed independent singles including “Hank Turns Blue”, “Beautiful
Monster”, 1985’s intense “Fire And Chrome” EP, and recorded three sessions for BBC
Radio’s John Peel Show.

The 14 Iced Bears were formed within a vibrant indie scene in Brighton in 1985 by
Robert Sekula and drummer Nick Emery, with a punky, DIY pop ethic that held melody
as key and technical expertise as less of an issue. They wrote catchy pop songs,
recorded with a ramshackle charm that reflected their passion for sixties garage and
psychedelia. Inspired by bands like The Byrds, and Velvet Underground this set them
apart from their C86 contemporaries.
They were spotted at their first gig by-ex Television Personalities bassist Mark
Flunder, he decided that he wanted to put out a 14 Iced Bears single on the fledgling
Frank Records and Inside, was released in late 1986. On hearing it, legendary BBC 1
Radio 1 DJ John Peel booked them in for a session. His enthusiasm was evident. He made
it one of his sessions of the year and praised each track in turn after playing it.
Balloon Song was featured in the session and the single version which fronted the
bands second single, The Importance of Being Frank EP further consolidated their
following. The band toured England and Europe and the press was ecstatic. The late
80s revival of classic guitar- based pop was kind to the ‘Bears, and Sekula’s talent
at penning catchy, twisted melodies earned them a coveted spot as one of the best of
the lot. A third single sealed the deal, the raucous Come Get Me on the seminal indie
label Sarah Records.
The band went on the release their self-titled debut album in 1988; it was a
masterpiece of psychedelic pop that turned a lot of heads with it’s ambition and
skilled songcraft. The album betrayed the influence of sixties psychedelia on the
group and became a hit on US college radio.

14 Iced Bears second album “Wonder” was Originally released in 1991, by now they were
listening more to The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Big Star and the 13th Floor
Elevators and they had strayed even further from their early indie-pop origins towards
spaced out soundscapes, their sound had become notably more psychedelic, with the band
drawing deeper on their 60s influences, while still retaining the feel for melody
present in their previous work.
The subsequent EP “Hold On/”Summer Nights”/”In The Morning” was to be the band’s last
release but they went on to support Sterling Morrison and Mo Tucker from the Velvet
Underground and Big Star’s Alex Chilton on his 1992 solo tour.
14 Iced Bears called it a day at the end of 1992 after Robert Sekula moved back to
London, Thereafter their cult status grew, fuelled by CD retrospectives from
Overground, Slumberland and Cherry Red. Culminating in 2010 when the band reformed
and toured the US.

Originally released in 1988 on Fierce Recordings as a collection of five one-sided
singles in a 7" cardboard box (etched on B-sides), with information insert, and hand
-drawn designs on the box and labels. It now sells for GBP250 if you are lucky enough
to find a copy. This release includes the original five tracks, and for the first
time, five tracks on the flipsides. All of the B-sides were recorded in 1988 and four
of them have never been available before, the other track 'Hard On Love', was released
in 1989 on a flexi-disc and has never been available in any other format. This is
a limited one time pressing on five different coloured vinyl 7" singles + 24 page
booklet.

Before The Bachelor Pad, there was The Wee Cherubs.
A collection of lost recordings made in Glasgow between 1982 & 1985. Restored and
remastered especially for this release.

Formed in 1982 by Martin Cotter, Christine Gibson and Graham Adam & part of the
Glasgow indie scene of the early 80’s.

The Wee Cherubs only released one single. The recently reissued Dreaming,
(which is included in this set) before calling it a day in 1985. Their range of
influences are on show here, and although some tracks are redolent of Orange
Juice and Aztec Camera there is no definitive Wee Cherubs sound, which makes
this collection an exciting and rewarding discovery

Cotter went on to The Bachelor Pad a psyche fuelled head on collision between
The Buzzcocks & Syd Barrett.

Seriously, I can't argue with that - and back in 1977 it probably stank even worse.
Luckily Disco Zombies lived far away enough (in Leicester) to not be affected by
the stench. They were a chirpy, upbeat post-punk five-piece with a storied history
and songs called things like 'Top of the Pops' and 'Punk a-go-go'. One of them ended
up discovering Blur a bit later down the line. This double-album collects all their
best bits, proving that if you made music between the years of 1977 and 1982, just
wait long enough and someone will give it the deluxe reissue package at some point.

Direct Hits were a mod revival band from Battersea. Their career lasted from 1980-1988,

the band’s chiming guitars and tight harmonies.

dressed up in carefree acoustically-minded pop. At the end of 1982, the group
signed to Virgin and went on to release Pacific Street (1984) and ... From Across
the Kitchen Table (1985). Michael Head later formed Shack in 1987 with his brother
